Canford suspension bridge Dorset, UK
Canford suspension bridge
Location: Dorset, UK
Software used: Advance Design
Structural Engineer: Dorset County Council Highways
Client: Borough of Poole
The bridge was likely to have been constructed between 1846 and 1922, and has historic significance in this conservation area. The challenge of this project was to remove concerns over the capacity of the bridge to carry full live loads.
“Advance Design was used to create a 2D model of one suspension cable. The model was used to assess loads in the cables and towers, as well as to predict deflection. This made use of the large displacement, non-linear capacity of Advance Design, as well as the capacity to model cast iron and steel cable characteristics.” - Matt Jones, Senior Engineer, Dorset County Council
